Duterte revokes Trillanes' amnesty for Magdalo mutinies

LATEST UPDATE: September 4, 2018 - 10:53am

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the amnesty granted to Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV in January 2011 as void.

In his Proclamation 572, Duterte claimed that the senator "did not comply with the minimum requirements to qualify under the Amnesty Proclamation."

The president has ordered the Department of Justice and court martial of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to pursue all criminal and administrative cases filed against Trillanes in connection with the Oakwood Mutiny in 2003 and the Manila Peninsula siege in 2007.

President Rodrigo Duterte has revoked amnesty granted to Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV in 2011 in relation to his involvement in mutinies against the administration of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2003, 2006 and 2007.

Duterte claims in Proclamation 572 that Trillanes "did not comply with the minimum requirements to qualify under the Amnesty Proclamation."

President Benigno Aquino III granted the amnesty through a proclamation in 2010 that Congress concurred in.

The amnesty proclamation covered active and former police and military personnel and "[extinguished] any criminal liability for acts committed in connection, incident or related to the July 27, 2003 Oakwood Mutiny, the February 2006 Marines Stand-Off and the November 29, 2007 Peninsula Manila Hotel Incident without prejudice to the grantee’s civil liability for injuries or damages caused to private persons."

Trillanes, a lieutenant, senior grade, at the time of the Oakwood Mutiny, applied for amnesty in 2011.

Duterte sacks Nayong Pilipino board members

President Rodrigo Duterte has fired the board of directors and management of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) for approving a supposedly disadvantageous lease deal, MalacaƱang said on Tuesday.
Duterte’s spokesperson, Harry Roque, made the announcement after the President expressed exasperation over continuing corruption in government.
“He [Duterte] cited the case of Nayong Pilipino which leased government property for a ridiculous long period of time of 70 years, beyond the lifetime of anyone, and he considered this as a contract which was grossly disadvantageous to government,” Roque said at a press briefing.
“He therefore announced that he was sacking all members of the Board and Management of Nayong Pilipino. The papers that will formally terminate the entire management and the entire board of directors of Nayong Pilipino will be issued in due course by the Executive Secretary,” he added.
He also said Duterte wanted the cancellation of the contract.

Dolores O'Riordan, the Cranberries Singer, Dead at 46

Singer of Nineties hits "Linger," "Dreams" and "Zombie" dies in London as police classify death as "unexplained"
By Daniel Kreps

"Dolores gave so much of herself at the gigs and continued to do so over the next decade or so," producer writes of "Irish songbird"

The band confirmed O'Riordan's death in a brief statement, "Irish and international singer Dolores O’Riordan has died suddenly in London today. She was 46 years old. The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session. No further details are available at this time. Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

In a separate statement, the Cranberries' Noel and Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawler said, "We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today."

No cause of death was revealed. A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police told the New York Times that police were called to London's Park Lane hotel Monday morning, where O’Riordan was pronounced dead at the scene. Her death has been classified as "unexplained," Reuters reports.

The Irish Times notes that the Cranberries were forced to cancel tour dates in 2017 due to O'Riordan's ill health; the band cited "medical reasons associated with a back problem." O'Riordan had also been diagnosed as bi-polar in 2014.

Philippine Daily Inquirer / 07:21 AM January 13, 2018

President Duterte on Thursday vowed to continue going after Islamic State (IS) sympathizers, and said Speaking at an event of the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., Mr. Duterte surmised that Islamic State, whose sympathizers laid siege to Marawi City for five months, could wreak havoc in the world for seven more years. “We need money because I have to sustain the campaign against the (IS), which [is] trying to gain a foothold somewhere and this will not disappear, not for the Philippines … not for Malaysia, Indonesia, not even for America and the rest of the world,” he said. ADVERTISEMENT He told the gaming officials that he appreciated the revenue that gambling operations give to the government, though he himself never liked the activity. “Personally I do not gamble. I do not even go to gambling houses … Not because I do not like you. I like all of you. Keep the money coming, no problem,” he said.
