What Is FrostWire Used For?

FrostWire is a BitTorrent client --- a program you install on your hard drive that allows you to download and upload files like MP3s, photos, movies and software applications. Although similar to basic BitTorrent clients like uTorrent, Frostwire has a few more features and is more user-friendly.

Definition

FrostWire is a Java-based file-sharing program used with the Gnutella and BitTorrent protocols. It is a branch of LimeWire, which is another Gnutella client that offers both free and paid versions. FrostWire, on the other hand, is a completely free program released under the GNU General Public License. FrostWire is also ad free, and does not contain download restrictions like the free version of LimeWire.

System Requirements
FrostWire requires a minimum of 128 MB of RAM, but 256 MB is recommended. It can be installed on Mac OS X 10.4 and later, Windows 2000 and later, and any version of Linux. It also requires Java 1.5 or later. Faster Internet connections, like cable or DSL, allow you to download files much faster in FrostWire than slower dial-up connections.

Download
In FrostWire, you search for files by typing the name of the desired file in the search bar. Any files that match your search are displayed in the results window. The files can be filtered by size, number of peers, type and speed. Simply click on the file you want to download, then click the "Download" button. Depending on your connection speed, larger files (like movies) can take several hours to download.

Upload
While installing FrostWire, you will be asked where you want to save the files you download, and if you want to share that folder. Any folders you share in FrostWire are available to other peers on the network, and files in shared folders are uploaded in the background while you use FrostWire. If you have a slower connection, you can limit the number of files that can be uploaded at one time by clicking on "Tools" and then "Options."

Features FrostWire features a built-in community chat that allows you to talk to other members while you download and share files, a media player, and settings to limit the number of searches and download/upload speeds. It also has advanced security and safety features, a "junk" filter, and a rating system for peers and file content. You can also manage open ports and "freeloader" limits, and share iTunes.
