Duterte sacks Nayong Pilipino board members

President Rodrigo Duterte has fired the board of directors and management of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation (NPF) for approving a supposedly disadvantageous lease deal, Malacañang said on Tuesday.
Duterte’s spokesperson, Harry Roque, made the announcement after the President expressed exasperation over continuing corruption in government.
“He [Duterte] cited the case of Nayong Pilipino which leased government property for a ridiculous long period of time of 70 years, beyond the lifetime of anyone, and he considered this as a contract which was grossly disadvantageous to government,” Roque said at a press briefing.
“He therefore announced that he was sacking all members of the Board and Management of Nayong Pilipino. The papers that will formally terminate the entire management and the entire board of directors of Nayong Pilipino will be issued in due course by the Executive Secretary,” he added.
He also said Duterte wanted the cancellation of the contract.

By Daniel Kreps

"Dolores gave so much of herself at the gigs and continued to do so over the next decade or so," producer writes of "Irish songbird"

The band confirmed O'Riordan's death in a brief statement, "Irish and international singer Dolores O’Riordan has died suddenly in London today. She was 46 years old. The lead singer with the Irish band The Cranberries was in London for a short recording session. No further details are available at this time. Family members are devastated to hear the breaking news and have requested privacy at this very difficult time."

In a separate statement, the Cranberries' Noel and Mike Hogan and Fergal Lawler said, "We are devastated on the passing of our friend Dolores. She was an extraordinary talent and we feel very privileged to have been part of her life from 1989 when we started the Cranberries. The world has lost a true artist today."

No cause of death was revealed. A spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Police told the New York Times that police were called to London's Park Lane hotel Monday morning, where O’Riordan was pronounced dead at the scene. Her death has been classified as "unexplained," Reuters reports.

The Irish Times notes that the Cranberries were forced to cancel tour dates in 2017 due to O'Riordan's ill health; the band cited "medical reasons associated with a back problem." O'Riordan had also been diagnosed as bi-polar in 2014.

Pres. Duterte and the PNP SAF are now Preparing for the biggest Drug Raid in Bilibib

MANILA - Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said that he will deploy the Philippine National Police Special Action Force (SAF) soon to man the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) and replace all Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) guards.
He said this may just be for a period of at least three months so that they don't overfamiliarize themselves with the convicts, and the Marines may be called to take the place of the SAF thereafter.
President Rodrigo Duterte has branded the New Bilibid Prison very problematic considering that convicted drug lords are still able to continue with their operations even while inside the state penitentiary.
Aguirre has recommended Marine Major General Alexander Balutan as new BuCor director-general.
He said Balutan's appointment may be made under an emergency power mechanism since Balutan is a military man and the SAF is under the PNP, which may be a sticky issue for the duration of the SAF's stay at the state penitentiary.
Balutan is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) class of 1983. He hit the news in the past for defying former President Gloria Arroyo's Executive Order (EO) No. 464 barring government officials and personnel from testifying before congressional inquiries minus her express permission, when in 2005 he and his then superior, Brigadier General Francisco Gudani, appeared before the Senate and spoke, under oath, about alleged cheating in Mindanao in the 2004 presidential elections.
He was court-martialed but the charges against him proscribed in two years even before he was brought to trial.

AIRPORT UPGRADES | Clean toilets, no more 'tanim bala'; up next: full CCTV, free wifi

By: Gerard dela Peña, Bloomberg TV Philippines
July 8, 2016 12:14 PM

MANILA - The Ninoy Aquino International Airport is perceived to be among the world's worst airports - failing, among many other things, to have orderly waiting areas and clean toilets.

But with the memorandum of understanding signed between the Transportation department and local airlines Thursday, clean toilets at the airports are now expected to be the norm starting next week.

The Manila International Airport Authority is currently the one in charge of the upkeep and maintenance of all the toilets at NAIA. Passing on this responsibility to the airline will allow the government to focus more on other facilities such as airconditioning units and the CCTV system."

According to Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade, the move is just one of the many service upgrades passengers can expect at the country's premier gateway.

"Expect an operation that is fully CCTV-ized, expect an airport that is communication-friendly, expect our airport where the toilet no longer stinks and the airconditioning works well. Today is a meaningful day. We are taking one big step to address issues that have made people in the republic uncomfortable and angry," Tugade said.

While all these changes will mean extra costs to the airlines, they say they don't mind as long as these translate to greater comfort for travellers.

Assad says British bombing in Syria will fail, ridicules PM Cameron

LONDON (Reuters) - British air strikes on Islamic State will fail to defeat the militant group, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said in an interview with the Sunday Times newspaper, mocking Prime Minister David Cameron's strategy in the region.

British lawmakers approved the bombing of Islamic State targets in Syria on Thursday. Hours after that approval, the Royal Air Force struck the oilfields that Cameron's government says are being used to fund attacks on the West.

Speaking in an interview conducted before the vote in parliament, the result of which had been widely anticipated, Assad said Cameron's strategy would make the situation worse, not better.

"They are going to fail again," he said. "You cannot cut out part of the cancer. You have to extract it. This kind of operation is like cutting out part of the cancer. That will make it spread in the body faster."

Erap wants Bongbong to be his running mate

Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada will run again for president next year if the disqualification of Sen. Grace Poe from the presidential race becomes final and Vice President Jejomar Binay is removed as a presidential candidate due to the corruption cases against him.

Estrada said he can substitute for Romel Mendoza, secretary-general of Kalipunan ng Masang Pilipino (Kampil), which is allied with his Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP). He wants Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to be his running mate, Estrada told The STAR in an interview.

“If I will run again, Bongbong Marcos will be my running mate,” he said.

“He is a strong candidate. He has the so-called solid North vote. He is also strong here in Metro Manila because of the housing programs that benefited thousands of Manileños in the 1970s when Mrs. Imelda Marcos was governor of the Metro Manila Commission.”

He has until Dec. 10 to make official his presidential candidacy, Estrada said.

“Many things can still happen in the remaining six or seven days before Dec. 10,” he said.
