Cleaning and Organizing Your Computer

It is a good idea to think of your PC as an office. It stores files, programs, pictures. This can be compared to an actual office's files, machines and decorations. The operating system is the boss. With this image in mind, think of an office you've visited that was slow and inefficient. There were probably many different reasons for the inefficiency. This is the same with a computer. There can be many items that slow down your computer. Perhaps the one most commonly overlooked is disorganization and clutter.

Disk Cleanup

An office can accumulate a lot of unnecessary files, machines, and decorations. This is the same with your computer. One of the best ways to keep this clutter under control is to perform a cleaning utility periodically. In Windows this cleaning utility will be called a "disk cleanup." It removes a variety of unnecessary files depending on the options you have selected.
To perform a disk cleanup on Windows XP you can simply click on "my computer" under the start menu. Than right click on your "c drive" or "hard disk" and choose properties. Than click "disk cleanup" and follow the prompts. When selecting files to clean up, or delete, Windows will give you information to help you decide. When looking over the list of file types, you would simple click on the name of the file type and read the description placed below in the description area. This will let you know if the files can be safely deleted. To select the file group just check the box next to the group name. When finished selecting press "OK" to finish.
Now, performing a disk cleanup is not very time consuming, just a couple minutes, and it may save more time in the end by making your computer run faster. However, a disk cleanup should be run periodically rather than just once in a great while. One way to make this run periodically is to make it a scheduled task. This will allow your computer to run it automatically with intervals and time of day determined by you. Yet, you can always run it yourself periodically without creating a scheduled task.

Are You Safe from Hackers?

We don't use E-gold very often since most of our online business and customer sales are conducted through our online merchant account. However, we occasionally have someone who will request paying by E-gold so we keep an account there for this reason. Once a month or so we withdraw the funds and decided to do so yesterday. Imagine our dismay when we logged into our E-gold account yesterday and found our balance to be a big fat ZERO! We had checked the balance just a few days ago so we knew this was not correct. After investigating the history of the account, we found that a spend had been made to another e-gold account user WITHOUT our knowledge or authorization. We had been hacked! Since we have up to date anti-virus and firewall software on our computer, we assumed we were safe. Not so! It seems this is not enough to keep away the hackers as the software does not prevent "Spyware" from being installed on your computer. "Spyware" is software that gets onto your computer and literally "spies" on your activities. The spying can range from relatively harmless use of cookies tracking you across multiple websites... to extremely dangerous "keystroke loggers" which record passwords, credit cards, and other personal data. That data then gets relayed to the person who put the software on your computer. Spyware gets on your computer in one of several different ways. First, it rides along with software you download from the 'Net and install on your system. Second, they come as email attachments (much like viruses) and automatically install themselves on your computer when you open the email message.
Third, hackers find an open port on your computer and use the "back door" to install basically anything they want.

And fourth, the more malicious types, like keystroke loggers, can even get installed by someone with direct physical access to your computer such as an employer, suspicious spouse, business competitor, or someone who wants to know exactly what you're doing.

So how do you protect yourself against these malicious hackers? You need a program that specifically scans your system for the tens-of-thousands of existing spyware programs along with the new ones appearing daily.

Below are two programs which specifically check for and remove spyware from your system:

"Spybot Search & Destroy" - www.safer-networking.org

"Ad Aware" - www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
You may have spyware lurking on your computer right now so protect yourself today by downloading one of the above programs!

2011 in Review: 'Thor' Trumps 'The Dark Knight Rises' on Twitter; First 2011 Movie Montages Arrive Online

Every year Twitter is kind enough to let us know what the top trending topics of the year were — because they don't want us to lose hope in humanity when we see things like "#YouKnowAFatPersonInvented" at the top of the list. It may look like a bunch of names and fragments from the year past, but the list can teach us a few things about 2011's most popular entertainment.

Top trenders are broken down into categories like "hashtags" and "television," but the one we're obviously interested in is "movies." It's not surprising that superheroes have won top spots on the list, with Thor coming in first. The film is a precursor to the long-awaited Avengers movie and bringing a popular comic character to life for the first time doesn't hurt either. The Dark Knight Rises holds the second spot. It isn't due out until July next year, but unless you've been living under a rock then you know the build up to Christopher Nolan's latest Batman movie has been immense. It would also help explain why the soon-to-be Catwoman, Anne Hathaway, is the number three trending actress on the list. X-Men: First Class holds the third spot, beating out last place's Green Hornet — which currently holds a 44% at Rotten Tomatoes. Trying to sell funnyman Seth Rogen as an action hero and a comic-book character a lot of people aren't familiar with are among a few of the reasons for its failures. Fast Five manages to be the only non-superhero flick in the group. The film did phenomenally well and Justin Lin has really brought the franchise back with a Fast Six on the way for 2013.

'Starship Troopers 4' is Happening, Will Focus on Neil Patrick Harris' Character

The idea of a new Starship Troopers movie focusing on Neil Patrick Harris' psychic intelligence officer from Paul Verhoven's original 1997 masterpiece (yes, masterpiece) is just too good to be true. Literally. As in, that idea isn't quite happening. Sony is moving forward on a fourth feature film sequel to Verhoeven's Troopers, and it will focus on Carl Jenkins, but unfortunately it won't be live-action.
Don't worry, that's not entirely a bad thing. As anyone who has seen Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation and Starship Troopers 3: Marauder can attest, simply being a live-action descendent of Verhoeven's film isn't a guarantee of quality. So perhaps the switch to animation for Starship Troopers: Invasion is exactly the breath of bug-killing air this franchise needs. Sony's also found someone who can be that breath: Shinji Aramaki, who anime fans will recognize as the director of Appleseed.
Ed Neumeier, who wrote all three of the previous films, will be returning as an executive producer, as will the star of the first and third films, Mr. Casper Van Dien, though this entry will be written by a one Flint Dille (he wrote the quite good video game Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay). As for the specifics of the plot, this is what The Hollywood Reporter was able to share, "The new story centers on Carl Jenkins ... going missing while on a clandestine mission with alien bug-fighting soldiers tasked with a rescue mission that has sinister consequences."
Starship Troopers: Invasion is expected to get a theatrical release in Japan, a nation that apparently has better taste than the US, where the film will be going straight to DVD and Blu-ray. As for what director Aramaki will be bringing to the table, here's the trailer for Appleseed:

Did You Know: Keanu Reeves Gave Up His 'Matrix' Money?

Everyone's favorite space cadet, Keanu Reeves, is one generous dude. The Speed actor has reportedly given away a huge chunk of change to some of The Matrix crew. Reeves signed off on a deal that transferred his profit-sharing points to the sci-fi franchise's special effects and costume design crew. The Wall Street Journal quoted an unnamed movie exec who said Reeves " … felt that they were the ones who made the movie and that they should participate."
Apparently the Constantine actor also shared his sky-high stacks on The Devil's Advocate, too. Reeves let producers skim a few million from his bank so they could afford the wicked John Milton AKA Al Pacino. Later on, he followed suit with The Replacements so he could work with Gene Hackman. Thanks to generous back-end deals on The Matrix franchise, Reeves should be set for life — particularly since he seems more interested in playing in a band and sadly eating a sandwich than flaunting his dough.
Reeves will be appearing in Generation Um… (sounds about right) and Carl Rinsch's upcoming 47 Ronin, which sends the star back to the 18th century for a samurai revenge tale.

Cool Concept Image of The Lizard from 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

Funnily enough, even though we're still a ways off from the 2012 summer blockbuster season, there's not a whole lot that hasn't been seen yet. We've already obsessed over teasers, images, trailers, set photos and set videos for a good deal of this summer's most anticipated movies, leaving only a few bits and pieces left to reveal. One of those is the villain The Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man, played by Rhys Ifans.
Yesterday brought us an image of what will apparently be a Lizard Pez dispenser, and now today SpiderMedia.ru has dropped what they claim is a concept image of the reptilian villain. Coming Soon points out that this image definitely resembles the version of The Lizard revealed during the film's Comic-Con presentation, only that one was "more massive." So as you obsess over this image, note that it's likely not the exact final version, but one that's sort of close to what we'll be seeing on screen.
Now the studio needs to reveal an image of this thing before the floodgates open and we start posting freakin' Lizard underwear images. C'mon folks, let this Lizard out of the bag!

Tom Cruise, Loopy Sci-Fi Soldier; ‘True Grit’ Heroine Blasts Off; Oh, Lord, the Three Wise Men as Action Heroes

Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It: Once again “hot,” Tom Cruise is looking for something to do next year after he completes filming of mystery thriller One Shot and sci-fi action flick Horizons. He’s considering We Mortals Are, to be directed by Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), based on Japanese graphic novel All You Need is Kill; Cruise would play a soldier stuck in a time loop when Earth is invaded by aliens. (The Hollywood Reporter)

Western Heroine Ready to Blast Off Into Space : Academy Award-nominated teen Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is “in talks” for a lead role in Ender’s Game, the big-screen adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s classic science-fiction novel. Casting news began heating up after Asa Butterfield was confirmed to play young Ender, with Harrison Ford among the names circulating for an older training commander character. (Variety)

Jesus Wept : Writer Seth Grahame-Smith (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter; Pride and Prejudice and Zombies) sold the movie rights to his forthcoming opus, Unholy Night, to Warner Bros. for an amount “in the vicinity of” $2 million. The novel converts the Biblical “three wise men,” who visited young Jesus, into action-adventure heroes. (Deadline)

From Phone to Big Screen : A movie shot on a smartphone will play in a Los Angeles theater for a week. Entitled Olive and directed by Hooman Khalili, the project ended up costing $500,000 (!) and the filmmakers had to build a 35-millimeter camera from scratch -- and then attach it to the phone with double-sided tape. (Los Angeles Times)

To Be or Not to Be : Nearly one month ago, film critic Roger Ebert revealed that his movie review show on public television was in financial trouble; now he’s announced that the show will go on hiatus at the end of the year while they suss out their options. Meanwhile, industry analyst Anne Thompson advises: “Let it go, Roger,” saying his new reviewers “simply lacked the right stuff.” (Roger Ebert’s Journal | Thompson on Hollywood)

Early Details Emerge for the Third 'Riddick' Adventure

Writer/director David Twohy is definitely returning to the land of Riddick, but based on this early report from Moviehole, the series seems to be heading back to the low-key Pitch Black approach and not the ridiculously over-produced tone found in the sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick. Yes, Vin Diesel is back.
Apparently casting is well underway for the as-yet-untitled Riddick 3, but those guys at Moviehole have read the script and if you don't mind a few minor spoilers, you can see what kind of characters the production is casting for. As for the plot, it seems to be a throwback to the first flick: Riddick stuck on a planet with unpleasant people and even nastier creatures. Insert mayhem here.
One interesting note found in this piece is the assertion that Riddick seems to have found a sense of humor. I'm not sure if this is good news or bad, but any time you combine action and sci-fi with monsters ... I'm interested. Yes, still interested even after the goofball experience that was The Chronicles of Riddick.
