When Floyd Mayweather Jr. is about to fight someone, his father is
usually the first to spill it out to the media as a sort of advanced
promotion. Floyd Sr. said to the press: “If there’s one fighter whose
a** I want Floyd to whip it’s Amir Khan – he’s no outstanding fighter
and as long as he stays here he’ll keep getting his a** whipped.” (as reported in The Daily Star .
The Floyd Mayweather Jr. camp usually don’t make comments about
whipping other fighters unless they have an intention to fight them. In
the case of the statement above, it was totally unsolicited on the part
of Mayweather’s camp. They are possibly fanning the thought of Floyd
Mayweather Jr. vs. Amir Khan in the minds of the people.
Furthermore, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has stated to the media that he
intends to visit the UK. He said to the media: “Mayweather Promotions
is coming to the UK for my fans at the end of the year.” Whether this
visit will be used as a precursor for an Amir Khan fight remains to be
seen, but it is highly likely.
Amir Khan may be a very good fighter who thinks he can beat Floyd
Mayweather Jr., but the truth is that he will always be known
originally as the sparring mate of Manny Pacquiao. In fact, his peg in
the Wild Card Gym is “Little Pacquiao”. The question here is, why is
Floyd seriously considering a fight with Amir Khan, when the truth is
that Amir has already been knocked out cold by Danny Garcia and is just
a sparring mate for Manny Pacquiao? Why not consider fighting the “True
Pacquiao” who has a bigger fan base and has more experience in the
ring? (Pacquiao has 54 wins, 5 losses. This is stellar compared to
Amir’s record of 28-3).
Floyd Mayweather Jr. claims that he won’t fight Manny Pacquiao
because the Filipino has already been knocked out and the fight will no
longer hold much weight. Now he’s considering a fight with Amir Khan
who is just the “Little Pacquiao”, has already been knocked out, and is
fighting Devon Alexander (who was also knocked out). If you come to
think of it, Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s inclination to fight Khan and
refusal to fight Manny Pacquiao is unexplainable. Pacquiao is the
biggest money payday for Floyd compared to Khan, Danny Garcia, or even
Bernard Hopkins. But to this date, Floyd keeps on brushing off any
Pacquiao related question and makes it sound as if Pacquiao is retired
and has a zero fan base.
Floyd Mayweather Jr. knows that his previous fight with Canelo is a
boring one, so he will try to resurrect his image to the boxing fans by
facing a fighter with a more exciting fighting style. Amir Khan is in
that category. Although to tell the truth, Khan doesn’t even have the
same level of excitement, skill, and fan base that Manny Pacquiao can
bring to the table.
But for reasons unimaginable, Floyd Mayweather Jr. just can’t muster
enough guts to face off with Manny Pacquiao, knowing that the risks of
losing is greater with Manny Pacquiao than with Khan. It’s going to be
pretty embarrassing later on because Floyd will have no other choice
but to get into rematches with opponents he already beat just to avoid
the real challenges out there.
