Wireless networks can be configured with open access, or with protected encrypted access. With an open wireless network, any computer or device within range of the wireless signal can connect without using a password. Wireless encryption forces the wireless client device to enter a password or network key before wireless access is granted. You can get the network key for a wireless security enabled network by logging into the wireless router's administration interface from a direct wired connection.
Instructions 1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to an available "LAN" port on the router.
2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on a computer.
3. Open a Web browser, then type the router's IP address into the address bar. This is usually "192.168.1.1." Refer to your router's user manual for details.
4. Press "Enter."
5. Enter the user name and password for the router. Common combinations are a blank user name and "admin" for the password, and "admin" for the user name and "password" for the password. Refer to the router's user manual for details.
6. Click the "Wireless" link. Some routers have a "Security" sub-link.
7. View the wireless network key.
